303. Muesli: Swiss-German Granola


As I have mentioned in the granola post, muesli and granola differ mainly in that the latter is baked, whereas the former is raw.
Muesli is a popular Swiss breakfast consisting of four main groups: grains (almost invariably oats, but can also have millet, puffed rice, bran, cornflakes...), dried fruit (raisins and sultanas most commonly, but really any dried fruit will do: blueberry, cranberry, dates, apricot...), nuts (brazil nut, almond, hazelnut, pecan, walnut, pistachio, coconut, peanut...), and seeds (shelled of course: pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds...).

Those are just the main components and look at all the freedom you have in the variety of choices!
The dried mixture of grain, dried fruit, nuts, and seeds is then stored in an airtight container, and small quantities are taken to suit your needs.
You can even add extras, according to taste, like chocolate pieces, candied citrus zest, or candied ginger
The muesli is served with milk, cornflakes-style. Here, too, you have the choice of regular milk, skim milk, soy milk, almond milk, yogurt, or others. To top off this already uber healthy breakfast, you can add some fresh fruit (banana slices, fresh berries, stewed apples... basically whatever you have on hand and is in season).



Ingredients:

1 1/4 cup oats
1/2 cup chopped nuts
3/4 cup dried fruit
1/2 cup popped rice
1/4 cup dessicated coconut

plus:
pumpkin seeds
sunflower seeds
chocolate chips




Method:

Mix everything in a bowl.
Store in an air-tight jar.
Take as much as you need in a bowl, pour over hot or cold milk, consume.
